The CLT plant in Meßkirch has recently been put into operation. “At this site, we are continuing the existing CLT production in Eberhardzell with a focus on wall and ceiling elements. In the next three or four years, there will be further phases of expansion, during which we will focus on further promoting ceiling finishing and our CLT Box elements. The extraction systems have been designed in such a way that we can cover the entire production with the 500,000 m³/h in extraction capacity after the final phase of expansion,” Andreas Schilling, site manager in Meßkirch/DE and project manager for technical plants at Best Wood Schneider, Eberhardzell/DE, explains.

High-performance impellers and negative pressure control

The three Segas-Plus extraction systems, all of which are equipped with spark extinguishers, are characterized by their high effectiveness and efficiency, as Scheuch Ligno informs. All fans are equipped with high-performance impellers and negative pressure control to save energy. This way, the fans are always optimally controlled. Previously, this kind of solution was only available for suction systems.

Axial fans were used to ensure 100% pressure equalization in exhaust air operation. Due to the layout of the CLT plant, these fans were installed outdoors and equipped with effective sound insulation. Furthermore, all fans are located in a sound insulation booth built by Scheuch Ligno or are equipped with pipe and return air silencers. In total, around 2,000 m of pipes were laid. The connected electrical load is 850 kW. Scheuch Ligno carried out the mechanical assembly, including the connection of cables, and put the systems into operation. In all three extraction systems, the extracted material is fed into the silo filter, which was built in 2022, via a HD conveyor line which connects them all.

Requirements fulfilled in the best possible way

Already in 2017, Scheuch Ligno installed three filter systems with a total extraction capacity of 400,000 m³/h at Best Wood Schneider in Eberhardzell. In 2021, the Upper Austrian company installed another Segas-Plus system with an extraction capacity of 42,000 m³/h at the same production site. “We have been working with Scheuch Ligno for a long time and are very satisfied with the company’s performance. This very large project in Meßkirch, too, was carried out successfully. Scheuch Ligno fulfilled our requirements in the best possible way. For us, it is very important that we have all-round state-of-the-art machinery, that all systems are energy-efficient in operation and that there is optimal sound insulation,” Schilling emphasizes.

Ecological solutions for modern timber construction

The new production site in Meßkirch offers Best Wood Schneider the opportunity to expand its portfolio of ecological solutions for modern timber construction. Also, it allows the company to maintain its market position as an innovative leader in the industry. The project is being carried out in the Northern Lake Constance Industrial Park between Meßkirch and Heudorf (in the Sigmaringen district, Baden-Württemberg) on a total area of 8 ha.

The sawmill and energy complex, including the pellet plant, have recently gone into operation, and more than 80 employees are already working in Meßkirch. The sawmill is designed for a cutting capacity of 350,000 m³ a year. The plant design ensures a continuous flow of materials. The absence of a log yard is the special feature of this production site.

The second phase of expansion has also been completed. It consists of a CLT plant for large-format panels made of domestic spruce in non-visible and industrial visible quality. In addition to residential buildings, these panels are also used in industrial and hall construction. For the construction of this plant, Best Wood Schneider used some of its own solutions, such as the CLT Box and wood fiber insulation. The company plans to create its own closed value chain in Meßkirch, a strategy which has already proven successful in Eberhardzell. Everything, from the spruce tree from surrounding forests to the end product, is to be processed locally into high-quality products which meet modern passive house standards.

High-efficiency extraction systems

According to the company, Scheuch Ligno’s Segas-Plus extraction systems are born out of the know-how acquired in the construction and installation of several hundred systems for the solid timber industry and, in particular, for productions and production processes with a constant level of utilization. “Segas” stands for “Scheuch energiesparendes Gruppen-Absaug-System” (Scheuch Effective Group Extraction System), while “Plus” stands for high availability despite demanding requirements, such as multi-shift operation, large quantities of sawdust and wood chips, high processing speed and failure-free, continuous operation.

Segas-Plus also stands for high efficiency thanks to tried-and-tested components. The prerequisites for this are meticulous planning when choosing resources, a specific and professional design of the individual extraction groups as well as a robust structure of the individual components.

The robust design of the components and the professional-grade wear protection for piping, fans and filter systems ensure high system availability and functional safety. Since all components are manufactured in-house by Scheuch, high quality and a good price-performance ratio are guaranteed. The resulting durability of the systems reduces life cycle costs.

Tried-and-tested system components

Key components of the Segas-Plus group extraction system include the automatic system control with touch panel, including remote maintenance, and the Ligno filter control cabinet for easy on-site operation as well as efficient special ventilators, the patented Impuls cleaning system and the top-down pre-separation of materials. A generously dimensioned screw feeder and locks with different rotor designs for an even discharge of materials complete the extraction system.
