From January to August, China’s softwood log imports fell by 8% year on year to 18.84 million m³. 2017 was the last year in which imports were lower in this period (18.49 million m³). In the first eight months of 2021, imports totaled over 33 million m³.
New Zealand, by far the most important supplier of softwood logs, was able to increase its shipments to China by 2% compared to the same period of 2022, which brings the total to 11.54 million m³. Purchases from Germany, on the other hand, were reduced significantly (2.5 million m³; -35%). Shipments from the US decreased as well (857,000 m³; -6%). Increases were recorded in softwood log imports from Japan (877,000 m³; +17%), Poland (739,000 m³; +208%) and Canada (655,000 m³; +8%).
