The gap widens – despite an inversion of the lumber price trend

Article by Gerd Ebner (translated by Eva Guzely) | 17.03.2023 - 08:56

In January, the log price index was at 171.1% (December 2022: 160.1%) according to the Austrian Timber Industry Association. The index value was only higher in the months from April to July 2022.

The lumber price index rose by 6 percentage points compared to the previous month, reaching 163% in January and ending the downward trend which began in May 2022 at an index value of 243%. Since then, the index had seen decreases month after month.

An analysis of Datacube data shows that January 2018 was the last time the log price index was higher than the lumber price index. The longest period with an above-average log price lasted from 2011 until the end of 2016. In our Datacube, you can find all data since records began in 2000.
