Decrease in pellet production, growing demand

Article by Philipp Matzku (translated by Eva Guzely) | 11.02.2025 - 09:31

2024 was a year of records for the Swiss pellet industry. Both pellet demand and production capacity as well as imports reached record levels.

In 2024, Switzerland imported a total of 120,400 tonnes of pellets. In 2023, imports totaled only 71,600 tonnes and in 2022, they amounted to 112,000 tonnes. Production output decreased by 5% year on year (2023: 341,000 tonnes) and by 12% compared to the record year of 2022 (367,000 tonnes). According to propellets.ch, interruptions in production were the main reason for the reduced output. The association emphasizes, though, that this was compensated for by high stock levels, increases in production of competitors and through imports. Thus, production output and imports were 3% or around 19,000 tonnes lower than demand.

In 2024, a difference of around 31% was recorded between production output and capacity. In 2022, there was a 7% difference between production output (368,000 t) and capacity (396,000 t).
