Less glulam produced

In 2021, glulam production in Austria and Germany was still close to the 3 million m³ mark. In 2022 and 2023, we are a long way from achieving this again – despite increased capacities.

The Austrian and German timber industries produced 2.84 million m³ of glulam in 2022. As a result, output fell by 2% compared to the same period of the previous year. In addition, the actual volume produced was 4% below the planned figures for the previous year given in autumn 2022, when moderate growth was still expected. For the current year, the planned figures collected by Holzkurier show a further decline of 1% to 2.81 million m³.

Newcomers made gains

The overall decline in 2022 is solely due to reduced production volumes in Austria (–5% to 1.53 million m³). Germany, on the other hand, recorded growth of 2% to 1.31 million m³ in 2022, which is due to four new or expanded locations. Holzwerke Bullinger increased output in Abtsgmünd/DE by 15,000 m³ to 25,000 m³, Cordes Holz in Bremerhaven/DE from zero to 9500 m³, Ladenburger in Bopfingen by 15,000 m³ to 100,000 m³ and Rettenmeier Holzindustrie in Hirschberg/DE by 40,000 m³ to 60,000 m³. If these locations are excluded, Germany would also have a minus of just under 5%.

New on the BSH map is the HS Timber production site in Kodersdorf/DE. The HS Timber Group company recently put a glulam plant into operation there. When fully operational, the annual output is expected to be around 80,000 m³.
