Already since 2011 the Derix Group has been producing cross-laminated timber at their production site in Niederkrüchten, Germany. Recently, the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new production hall took place in Westerkappeln. “Thanks to the considerable extension of our production capacities, we can create more space and possibilities for the realisation of future projects. With the construction of the new CLT production hall, output in Westerkappeln will double”, explains Markus Brößkamp, managing director of Poppensieker & Derix. “This expansion will raise the overall capacity of the Derix Group to more than 100,000 m³ a year in the medium term.” The company does not name a precise figure regarding CLT output. In recent Timber-Online surveys on production, however, the Derix Group reported an annual output of 12,500 m³ of CLT and 21,500 m³ of glulam in Niederkrüchten and of 40,000 m³ of glulam in Westerkappeln.

The unsupported roof structure of the new 300 metre long and 50 metre wide production hall will be built exclusively in wood. “Realising a 14,000 m²-hall with an unsupported roof shows what can be done with wood”, says Markus Derix, managing director of the Derix Group. The total sum invested in the hall supposedly reaches double-digit millions. Production is going to start in mid 2019. In the medium term, up to 50 new jobs could be created. According to the board of directors, the machinery uses state-of-the-art technology, and the company only collaborates with renowned manufacturers.

The construction of the new CLT production site is a reaction to the rising demand. The group creates higher capacities expanding, at the same time, its flexible and scalable processes. “Our clients appreciate the short construction times which we are able to offer thanks to a high degree of prefabrication and a rapid assembly on the construction site”, comments Brößkamp.
