US and China most important markets for German lumber

Article by Günther Jauk (translated by Eva Guzely) | 14.03.2023 - 12:05

In January, Germany exported just under 822,000 m³ of softwood lumber, recording a year-on-year increase of 5% and missing the record quantity for the month of January, which was reached in 2008, by only a few hundred cubic meters, as a look in the Datacube shows.

Despite the low prices for lumber in the US at the beginning of the year, German shipments have grown massively in January. Compared to the same month of 2022, they were up by around 50%, totaling 268,000 m³. A marked increase, i.e. +40% to 72,000 m³, was also recorded in exports to China.

Smaller volumes of softwood lumber, on the other hand, were exported to Germany’s neighboring countries France (67,000 m³; -15%) and Austria (43,000 m³; -14%).

Exports to Italy rose by 18% to 47,000 m³ and those India doubled, reaching a total of 44,000 m³.

A remarkable development can be observed in the trade flow to Canada. As data published by Destatis show, export volumes have skyrocketed, from 360 m³ in January 2022 to more than 20,000 m³ in the first month of this year.
