Softwood sawn timber imports decreased

Article by Martina Nöstler (translated by Eva Guzely) | 06.08.2020 - 15:36

With 16.28 million m³ in the months from January to June, the US’s softwood sawn timber imports fell by 7% year on year. This decrease is due to a reduction in imports from Canada which were at 14.15 million m³ in the first half year and thus down by 10% according to the FAS. An increase in imports from Europe was not enough to compensate for this negative development.

718,000 m³ of softwood sawn timber were bought from Germany, i.e. 37% more than in the first half year of 2019. Imports from Sweden rose by 64% to 381,000 m³, those from Brazil increased by 12% and reached a total of 287,000 m³. The US received 136,000 m³ from Austria and thus 36% compared to last year.

Decreases were recorded in softwood sawn timber imports from Chile (117,000 m³; -7%) and New Zealand (88,000 m³; -21%).
