In the same period of 2023, trade totaled 26.62 million m³ and a year before, it amounted to 29.19 million m³.
Canada is by far the largest exporter of softwood lumber. In the first quarter, 7.44 million m³ were sold on foreign markets. Compared to the same period in 2024, this corresponds to a decrease of 8%, or 681,000 m³. Russia, which ranks second, exported a total of 4 million m³, i.e. nearly the same volume as in the first quarter of 2024 (-1%). Sweden completes the podium with an export volume of 3.63 million m³ and a year-on-year increase of 6%, or 216,000 m³.
Germany (2 million m³; -15%), Latvia (662,000 m³; -21%), and the US (652,000 m³; -15%) recorded substantial decreases in their respective softwood lumber exports in the first three months. By contrast, significant growth rates were achieved by Finland (2.06 million m³; +29%), Austria (1.61 million m³; +16%), and Brazil (747,000 m³; +13%). As a result, Germany lost its fourth place in the ranking of the largest softwood lumber exporters from the first quarter of 2024 to Finland, and Brazil swapped places with the US this year.
