China imports significantly more softwood logs

Article by Günther Jauk (translated by Eva Guzely) | 27.12.2021 - 09:10

In the first eleven months, China’s softwood log imports grew by 9.8% year on year, totaling 45.6 million m³. New Zealand (18.3 million m³; +29%) and Germany (10.7 million m³; +29%) were the two main supplying countries.

Editor’s note regarding German shipments to China: Data published by the German Federal Statistical Office Destatis show an entirely different picture. Destatis reports around half of the quantity that China recorded and a decrease in exports to the country. One explanation could be that shipments from German ports are automatically recorded as German exports by the Chinese authorities.

From January to November, China imported smaller volumes of softwood logs from Russia (3.64 million m³; -11%), its number three supplier.

Other important supplying countries were the US (2.95 million m³; +27%), Uruguay (1.86 million m³; +134%) and the Czech Republic (1.41 million m³; -54%).
