In the 1H, Japan's timber imports decreased by 17.9%: Only 4.8 million m³ made their way to the insular state. In comparison to the same period last year, lumber imports decreased by 11.6% to a total of 3.1 million m³, and log wood imports even shrank by 21.1% to 950,000 m³. Almost all supplying countries cut back their deliveries to Japan, as the Japan Lumber Journal reports.
North America shipped 730,000 m³ across the Pacific (-26.3%), and European lumber imports declined by 19.2%. Chile was the only country to expand their lumber deliveries to Japan (+9.4%, 119,489 m³).
When it comes to log wood, Africa was the only supplier who increased log wood imports to their Asian customer (+22.5%, 1125 m³).
