Nine plants went into operation in 2022, five are to follow in 2023

Article by Holzkurier editorial team (translated by Eva Guzely) | 03.11.2022 - 10:05

According to research done by the Holzkurier, Austria will see its pellet production capacity increase by 350,000 tons to 1.8 million tons by the end of the year. Three integrated production sites, namely Donausäge Rumplmayr, Holzindustrie Kirnbauer and EHO Pellets, went into operation this year. Cycleenergy in Aschach and RZ Pellets in Sollenau buy the raw material they need. In November, Nawaro will put the recently acquired pellet mill in Göpfritz into operation. Meanwhile, companies Andreas Wiesbauer and Schößwendter Holz have substantially increased their capacities. At the same time, production sites, such as FM Pellets, lose important raw material suppliers as a result of these developments and are forced to stop pelleting.

Tilly Holzindustrie plans to put a pellet mill with a capacity of 150,000 tons into operation in 2023. Stallinger will enter the pellet producing segment in summer, with a capacity of 50,000 tons in the first phase of expansion. At the end of 2023, the plant should be at full capacity, producing 120,000 tons a year. Mayr-Melnhof Holz in Reuthe, and Franz Moser in Neumarkt want to start producing pellets in the first quarter. This way, the total capacity will grow by more than 360,000 tons in Austria next year.

In Germany, the pellet production capacity will total around 4.8 million tons at the end of this year. Companies which did not provide the Holzkurier with any figures on capacities are not included. Lenne Pellets’ pellet mill has been in operation since April. In December, Pieper Holz wants to put its pelleting plant into operation, which will have an annual capacity of 100,000 tons. In the course of 2023, Best Wood Pellet’s mill in Meßkirch will be operative.

It has to be mentioned that there were standstills or curtailments of production due to fire damage at a number of German companies, such as Schwaiger Holzindustrie, Bayerwald Pellet and Overbeck Bioenergie. In Switzerland, the pellet capacity amounts to around 450,000 tons in 2022.
