In the first seven months, Germany imported 30.7 million wood pallets, recording a year-on-year decrease of 36%. The “annual balance” improved somewhat compared to the period January to June, even though there was only a slight increase of 1.8%.
Main supplier Poland, which accounts for over 40% of Germany’s total imports, reduced its deliveries by around 37% in the first seven months. The other main supplying countries, i.e. the Czech Republic (-32% to 5.6 million pallets) and the Netherlands (-26% to 2.5 million pieces) also recorded substantial decreases, which reflects the general downward trend in this period.
What is also noticeable is the fact that not one of the Top 10 supplying countries was able to keep decreases in the single digits. Denmark recorded the smallest loss, i.e. -10%. It has to be said, though, that at around 720,000 pallets, this country’s trade volume is relatively small.

Unchanged situation in German exports
The 22% decrease in the first seven months of 2023 is in line with this year’s trend in pallet exports. This year, Switzerland was the new number one buyer of German wood pallets with 2.5 million pieces (-10%), after it had only been the third most important export market in 2022. The Netherlands (-38% to 2.5 million pallets) and Austria (-27% to 2.3 million pieces) follow in second and third place, respectively.
The only market which saw a more or less constant development compared to last year is Italy. In the first seven months, Italy imported 890,000 pallets from Germany, which corresponds to a slight decrease of 2%.
