According to figures published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 193,700 building permits were issued for new housing units in Germany in the months from January to November 2024. Compared to the same period of 2023, the number of permits fell by 18.9% or 45,200 units. These figures include building permits for housing units in new residential and non-residential buildings as well as for new apartments in existing buildings.
In new residential buildings, permits for 14,200 apartments were issued in Germany in November 2024 (-16.8% or -2,900 year on year). From January to November 2024, the construction of 158,000 new apartments was approved (-21.8% or -44,100 year on year). The number of building permits for single-family homes fell to 34,800 (-22.1%, -9,900 permits), while that of building permits for two-family homes decreased to 11,700 (-12.7%, -1,700). When it comes to multi-family houses, the number of permitted apartments fell to 101,200 (-22.4%, -9,300).
