In southwestern France, south of Bordeaux, severe wildfires destroyed approximately 45,500 ha in the second half of July. The Massif des Landes de Gascogne comprises roughly 1 million ha of forest where maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) predominantly grows. According to the daily newspaper Le Monde, official estimates put the volume of damaged wood at 3.7 million m³. Industry representatives, assuming higher timber stocks, expect up to 9 million m³.
