At two booths at Ligna, Microtec will present the groundbreaking concept of CT cross-training as well as the latest generations of its Logeye and Goldeneye 900 scanner solutions. At the heart of these developments is Microtec Connect, a complete network based on the only truly reliable data source in the industry – computed tomography.

When one scanner trains another

With the concept of CT cross-training, Microtec is redefining scanner technology. For the first time, scanners can learn from each other and access insights based on computed tomography data. This significantly improves optimization and grading processes, thereby maximizing the yield from the valuable raw material – an aspect that is ultimately also reflected in operating results.

By connecting Microtec CT technology with the company’s Ai platform, complete reconstructions of the internal characteristics of the logs and CT scan data can be transferred to other scanners within the network. Even scanners which are not designed to detect internal wood properties benefit from the scanner data.

“CT cross-training fundamentally changes the way we think about scanner performance. By relying on the only real data basis – CT technology and Microtec Ai – we reach a whole new level of intelligence and optimization in the sawmill,” Microtec’s CTO Philipp Bock emphasizes. He will also present this concept in detail on Thursday, May 28, at 4:00 p.m. at the Ligna.Stage.

Log scanning at a new level

Another highlight visitors of Ligna can look forward to is the latest version of the Logeye multi-sensor scanner. It combines modular laser, color camera and X-ray sensors as well as stereoscopy for maximum versatility and the highest precision in log measurement – both overbark and underbark.

“The new version of the Logeye was developed with a strong focus on user-friendliness. The design has been optimized to facilitate the retrofitting of key components such as the new high-resolution color camera and the new motion compensation module,” Thomas Gagliardi, Product Manager for Log Solutions at Microtec, explains.

The Logeye scanner captures the diameter, length, volume, curvature, and taper of logs with exceptional accuracy. “Thanks to the multi-sensor approach, one of its key strengths lies in the integration of the Microtec Ai platform. By leveraging data from real CT scans, the detection performance of all Logeye models is optimized. This results in unprecedented accuracy and reliability,” Gagliardi emphasizes.

Improved lumber grading

The Goldeneye 900 has been impressing for years with its high precision in the transverse quality grading of green, dry, or planed lumber. “The new smart design of the Goldeneye 900 ensures easy maintenance and seamless integration into any production line without compromising on its industry-leading performance,” Alberto Miglioranza, Product Manager for Board Solutions at Microtec, explains. The well-known artificial intelligence in imaging is now enhanced by generative networks created through CT cross-training. This forward-looking technology enables the existing sensor technology to detect additional wood properties, for example, the position of the pith along the board. The result: higher grading accuracy, increased efficiency, and maximum throughput in a single scan pass.
