In 2023, Austrian pellet production exceeded domestic consumption by 3%. According to proPellets Austria, wood pellets will be produced at 54 mills in Austria by the end of 2024.
In 2022, the production output was 1.69 million t and consumption totaled 1.25 million t. Since 2015, more than 1 million t of wood pellets are produced in Austria each year. Demand only reached this mark four years later, in 2019.
Data published by proPellets Austria show that last year, the biggest quantity was produced in Styria (356,000 t), followed by Upper and Lower Austria. When it comes to consumption, it is the other way around: Lower and Upper Austria rank first and second, and Styria is in third place with a consumption of 289,000 t.
