In 2024, cross-laminated timber producers recorded a minimal increase in production. After annual growth rates of around 10%, output in the DACH region, Italy, and the Czech Republic totaled 1.31 million m³ in 2024 and thus exceeded the 2023 level by just a few cubic meters. Target production output was lower by 8%. In 2025, however, production is expected to increase by 12% (nearly 160,000 m³) to 1.47 million m³.
Strong increases
The relatively new production facilities of Mayr-Melnhof Holz in Leoben (+25,000 m³) and Best Wood Schneider (+20,000 m³) in Meßkirch/DE, are partly responsible for the strong growth in 2025. Around Easter 2025, the Pfeifer Group launched three-shift operation at its CLT production plant in Schlitz/DE for the first time, increasing its annual production by 25,000 m³ compared to 2024.
Binderholz raises its output by 15,000 m³, and the Hasslacher Group and Holzwerke van Roje increase production by 10,000 m³ each.
Upper Austrian CLT manufacturer LOC Holz achieved a production record with an increase of 11,000 m³ to 36,000 m³. Newcomer Cltech from Kaiserslautern/DE, more than doubled its CLT production volume to a total of 13,000 m³.
Production curtailments
Stora Enso, which does not report its target figures, recorded a decrease in production of 55,000 m³ to 160,000 m³ from 2023 to 2024 at its three Central European sites.
Thüringer Holzwerke Hermsdorf/DE (formerly part of the Ziegler Group) reduced its production output from 35,000 m³ in 2023 to 5,000 m³ and 6,000 m³ in 2024 and 2025, respectively.
Room for improvement
At just under 1.5 million m³, annual output remains well below the theoretical capacity of 2.3 million m³, although the gap between these two figures is expected to close somewhat in the coming years. Following the launch of numerous large production sites in recent years, only a few, mostly smaller facilities will commence operations in the DACH region in 2026 and 2027.
