Glulam and CLT: Spain growing, Japan with a further slump

Article by Gerd Ebner (translated by Eva Guzely) | 09.10.2025 - 14:19

Italy remains the most important foreign sales market with a volume of 425,000 m³ and a 3% decrease compared to 2024 (439,000 m³). Nevertheless, the current export volume is at the upper end of the scale in the past decade. According to Statistik Austria, over 460,000 m³ of laminated timber were exported in the first seven months of the record year of 2021.

Deliveries to Germany rose to 240,000 m³ in 2025, an increase of 11% compared to the 216,000 m³ recorded in the first seven months of 2024. A higher level, i.e. 319,000 m³, was last reached in 2021.

Spain is back in the Top 5. At 73,000 m³, the country purchased a new record volume of Austrian glulam and CLT. This volume is also 50% above the ten-year average of 50,000 m³, recorded in the years from 2015 to 2024.

The exact opposite development can be observed in Japan, where the negative trend continues. From January to July 2025, Austria exported 50,000 m³ there (-15%). At 75,000 m³, the ten-year average is 50% higher than current exports. Deliveries to France decreased by 13% to 75,000 m³.

Overall, 2025 has so far been a stable year for exports. The level remains high thanks to the German and Spanish markets.
