Austrian producers reported a glulam production output of 1.5 million m³ for last year, that is 5% more than they had originally planned. Compared to 2023, the volume remained constant. In 2025, glulam production is expected to remain 50,000 m³, or 3%, below this volume. This would be the lowest level in the past five years.
Germany increases its glulam production
Meanwhile, glulam production in Germany is expected to reach a new record high and approach Austria’s level as a result. German producers plan to increase their output by 2% to 1.4 million m³ in 2025. This increase is due, among other things, to the further ramp-up of production at Cordes, which is expected to reach 70,000 m³ for the first time this year. Ante-Holz, MM Holz in Wismar, and best wood Schneider each report an increase in glulam production of 10,000 m³ compared to 2024. Output at the former Ziegler site in Hermsdorf, however, will halve. There, the new owner, Thüringer Holzwerke Hermsdorf, only operates the special glulam production line.
No clear price trend
Some producers have already raised their prices by up to €25/m³ in September and are now charging €580/m³. Others have maintained their August prices. The further development of prices will depend primarily on the price trend of raw lamellas: “We are currently negotiating contracts for the fourth quarter and will adjust our prices starting in October,” one Austrian market participant told the Holzkurier. This assessment is shared by the timber trade sector: “There are producers who reacted immediately when there were signs of higher lumber prices. Other companies do the opposite since they want to sell all their volumes. In some cases, offers differ by as many as €50/m³.”
In terms of volume, September has been a satisfactory month so far. Demand remains high in Austria and in Italy. The German market, however, is competitive. “We have largely withdrawn from Germany,” one Austrian producer states. “The market has become somewhat more sluggish in the post-summer holiday season. People are only buying what they really need,” a southern German producer analyzes.
Commercial construction in Austria struggling
While construction activity in the private sector, in additions and conversions segments, as well as in the prefabricated component industry, is doing well, an Austrian timber builder who primarily works in large-scale commercial construction explains: “At the moment, there is fierce competition even in timber construction. There are no projects in residential construction and, because municipalities are on the brakes, not in the public sector either.”
In Italy, the situation is different. Private consumption did decline there, too, but public construction is doing well, as one Austrian glulam producer that exports large quantities to Italy reports. Demand is particularly strong in the regions surrounding the host cities of the 2026 Winter Olympics. “The big hype is over, but we have enough projects,” a German commercial builder tells us. Germany and Austria agree on the need for concrete political signals and reliable framework conditions.
Waiting for developments in the autumn
The market development over the coming months will depend primarily on how much the price for the raw goods will increase. “Since we have a lot of inventory orders, we are preparing for a rather quiet autumn,” one producer comments.
