Finland still supplied most of the nearly 47,000 m³ of laminated timber which Japan imported in January, i.e. 19,000 m³ (+1%). A look in our Datacube shows that Finland has been Japan’s number one supplier of glulam and CLT for more than a decade.

Back then, Finland was still behind Austria. However, the small Alpine country has since been unable to return to the levels recorded in the early 2010s. With 5,000 m³ (+7%) exported to Japan, Austria came in second and lies far behind Finland. China managed to almost quadruple its shipments and now ranks third with an increase of 275% and a volume of 4,300 m³. Germany’s entry in the Top 10 noteworthy as well. In January 2023, Germany had sold zero cubic meters of laminated timber to Japan. This year, exports amounted to almost 2,500 m³.

Double-digit decreases were recorded in imports from Estonia (2,800 m³; -50%) and Romania (2,500 m³; -51%), for example. Both countries saw their trade volumes halve compared to January 2023.
