An investigation by non-profit organization Earthsight – released to mark the first anniversary of the war in Ukraine – found that U.S. punitive tariffs against Moscow did not stop imports of Russian timber to the United States.

Customs records show that the United States imported more than 260,000 m³ of plywood from Russia in the first ten months after the invasion (i.e., between March and December 2022). Earthsight estimates the value of the traded wood at about USD1.2 bn.
