With a total of 2.91 million m³, Austrian and German glulam producers reported another record output in 2020 (this includes companies which reported their figures for the table). Compared to 2019, this is a 5.6% increase. According to Holzkurier’s research, the overall production volume will grow by another 5.2% and pass the 3-million-m³-mark for the first time ever (Holzkurier took over the 2020 figures of the companies which did not report their figures.). Last year, 1.59 million m³ of glulam were produced in Austria and 1.32 million m³ in Germany. This year, output is going to reach 1.68 million m³ and 1.37 million m³, respectively.
The biggest single production sites
The biggest glulam production in Central Europe is that of Binderholz in Jenbach. Last year, the Tyrolean company produced 265,000 m³ at this site. This year, 300,000 m³ are the target. The second biggest glulam production site in the German-speaking area is operated by Hasslacher Group in Magdeburg, followed by Mosser Leimholz in Randegg.
Three companies produce nearly 1 million m³
In 2020, Hasslacher Group was by far the biggest glulam producer with an overall output of 400,000 m³ at its production sites in Magdeburg and Kleinheubach in Germany and Sachsenburg and Hermagor in Austria. Compared to 2019, the Carinthian timber company increased its production by 30,000 m³. Mayr-Melnhof Holz is the second biggest glulam producer with 320,000 m³, followed by Binderholz with 265,000 m³. In total, the “Big Three” produced 985,000 m³ and thus have a market share of more than one third.
One comes and one goes
Bavarian Ziegler Group is a newcomer in the glued timber sector. In 2019, the company acquired the glulam and CLT production site Hermsdorf from Tecsol and reported an output of 75,000 m³ of glulam for 2020.
The production site in Richen is part of the glulam table for the last time. In April, Gropyus discontinued its glulam production and is now starting up what the company refers to as “Europe’s most modern wall production”. Up until 2019, the production site in Richen was owned by Mayr-Melnhof Holz, and its sale was also mostly handled by the Styrian company.
Further productions planned
When you take a look at Holzkurier’s most recent table of expansions and new constructions, you can find as many as six of such projects for glulam: Bullinger in Abtsgmünd/DE, Cordes Holz in Bremerhaven/DE, HS Timber in Kodersdorf/DE, Rettenmeier in Hirschberg/DE and Stora Enso in Ybbs. All of them are going to build either new plants or at least new production lines. Pfeifer Holz expanded the finger-jointing lines at its glulam plant in Imst.
