In absolute numbers, a 1.45% increase means a volume of 2.2 million casements. In 2019, the demand for new constructions grew by 3.2% year on year. With a growth of 6.3%, the construction of apartment complexes had a significant influence on the result, whereas other segments, such as the construction of private homes (+0.8%), saw low or stagnating sales.

In 2019, no increase could be observed in the renovation sector. However, according to the authors of the study by the market research institute Branchenradar, the percentage of renovations is still relatively high with around 2% of windows being replaces in existing apartments. As to facades and roofs, the percentage of renovation was only half or less. On the one hand, it is easier to replace windows than roofs. Also, the stress for end-users caused by construction works is less with windows, where only a day is needed, than with roof renovations which take around a week.

The moderate growth of the Austrian window and door market sees a higher value thanks to an increase in revenue, the study authors analyze. For example, the average price of plastic windows rose by 1.2% compared to 2018 and by 2.7% with wood-aluminum windows. The higher margins are mainly due to higher-priced models. Sales of (architecturally trendy) lifting sliding doors grew by 3% compared to the previous year.

Last year, sales of windows and window doors amounted to around € 857 million. There were increases for all frame materials with the exception of all-wood windows. This particular segment recorded a fall in sales of almost 10% compared to the previous year. Wood-aluminum windows and plastic windows, on the other hand, saw increases of 5.1% and 2.8%, respectively.

For 2020 and 2021, the study by Branchenradar expects a solid growth of 2.5 to 3%.
