€ 130 million for another CLT plant

Article by Gerd Ebner (translated by Eva Guzely) | 15.01.2020 - 08:35

The enormous sum of € 130 million is invested in a CLT plant with an annual production of 140,000 m³ at full capacity, which the company wants to reach in the first two phases of expansion (80,000 m³/year and then 60,000 m³/year), as well as in a new high-performance post-sorting system and a planing plant. Thanks to the purchase of the former Novoplan premises from Egger, an overall 33,000 m² are available for the entire production complex in Leoben.

In Gaishorn, Mayr-Melnhof Holz already produces 70,000 m³ of CLT every year. The planned additional 140,000 m³/year bring the total to 210,000 m³. The company is thus the third biggest producer in Europe – after Binderholz with 220,000 m³/ year (target 2019) and Stora Enso (currently 270,000 m³/year in Austria and Sweden). Binderholz plans a further expansion to 320,000 m³/year, and Stora Enso could produce around 390,000 m³/year in the future (including projects for which feasibility studies have been commissioned).

In 2018, Mayr-Melnhof Holz had a turnover of € 684 million, and thus ranks third among Austria’s biggest timber companies after Binderholz (€ 999 million) and Pfeifer Holding (€ 707 million). The company’s equity ratio was 47% in 2018.

In Leoben, Efimovskij/RU und Paskov/CZ, Mayr-Melnhof cuts a total of around 3.4 million m³ of logs each year. The glulam output of the production sites in Gaishorn, Reuthe, Richen/DE, Wismar and Olsberg amounted to about 400,000 m³ in 2018. At the end of 2019, Mayr-Melnhof announced the planned sale of the site in Richen (glulam production output: 70,000 m³/year).

The group operates three sawmills, complete with pellets productions, in Leoben, Paskov/CZ and in Efimovskij/RU. Further processing is done at the production sites in Gaishorn, Reuthe, Wismar/DE and Olsberg/DE. Founded in 1850, the company employs around 2000 people at its headquarters in Leoben and at its various production sites.
