Japanese construction market close to a negative record

In 2024, there was another decrease in housing construction starts in Japan compared to the already weak previous year. The only time there was even less construction activity in this millennium was in 2009, shortly after the global financial crisis.

In 2024, there were 792,098 housing construction starts in Japan. Year on year, this corresponds to a slight 1% decrease (2023: 800,176). This also marks the first year since 2009 that the number of housing construction starts fell below the 800,000-mark. Back then, around 775,000 starts were recorded.

As figures published by Statistics of Japan show, 2024 was the second-weakest year since records began in 1995.
