The downward trend continues

Statistics of Japan reported around 66,000 housing construction starts in June. Compared to the previous month of May, the number increased by just a few hundred units. In comparison with June 2023, however, housing construction starts decreased by 7%.

In the first six months of 2024, a total of 391,000 housing construction starts were reported, i.e. 5% fewer than in the same period of last year. It is also the lowest number since 2010.

A similar downward trend can be observed in Japanese imports of wood products. Lately, however, there seems to be an inversion of trend both when it comes to lumber and to laminated timber.
