From January to March 2024, 53,500 building permits were issued for the construction of new buildings and work on existing buildings and apartments in Germany. Compared to the first quarter of 2023, this corresponds to a 22% decrease. In March alone, nearly 18,500 permits were issued (-25% compared to March 2023; -47% compared to March 2022).
The biggest year-on-year decrease, i.e. -36% to around 9,200, was recorded in the number of permits for the construction of buildings with one housing unit. Permits for new buildings with two housing units decreased by 20% to around 2,000, while the number of permits for buildings with three or more housing units was down by 23% to 28,700. As for residential buildings, a 20% decrease to 1,700 permits was recorded.
