The Austrian specialist for fastening systems, Sihga of Ohlsdorf, presents its latest addition to the product range. Modern, mechanical connections increase the efficiency and safety of timber constructions. Sigha’s Idefix DWD roof-wall-ceiling fastening system is a good example. The product was developed specifically for connecting cross-laminated timber and other solid wood elements. It is used for the assembly of both ceilings and walls and ensures a shear-resistant connection between the elements.

Function and fastening

When installing the system, holes must first be drilled into the timber elements. Only one hole with a diameter of 40 mm is required for each connector.

When it comes to adjacent walls, the holes are drilled with the Idefix IB HMB drill using the IBG drilling jig. For corner joints, only the Idefix IB HMB is used. The drilling can either be done on the construction site or at the factory. To guarantee a safe connection, the timber elements must have a minimum thickness of 80 mm for wall and ceiling connections and 100 mm for corner connections. After drilling, the SC 6-coated Idefix DWD is inserted into the hole.

In the next step, the 360° screw connection is made with the Gofix HK screws which are also included in the system. These are screwed into the timber element at a 45° angle. This way, solid timber elements can be connected with each other in parallel and across corners. According to Sihga, the connector passed tests in CLT and solid timber elements, which makes shear-resistant connections of timber elements of all sizes and types possible. Screwing in the SC 1-coated countersunk head screw (pressure cap M16 DIN screw) secures the screw connection and ensures an even load distribution.

Advantages

Thanks to the flush construction, no further steps, such as adapting the following wall layers, are necessary. Sigha’s experts calculate the values for each individual application.
