Fewer housing starts compared to last year

Statistics Japan reports approximately 369,000 new housing starts in the first five months of this year. The number fell by 4% from 385,750 housing starts in the same period of 2017, and also decreased compared to the first five months of 2016 which had seen more than 377,000 starts.

In May alone, new housing starts in Japan slightly increased by 1% compared to May 2017, reaching a total of 79,539.
