Production falls to lowest level in more than 20 years: Is Germany once again on its way from net exporter to net importer?

2026 will be a fateful year for the German sawmill industry. After the decline in sales in 2023 and 2024, there was a stabilization last year and this year sawn timber prices are under strong pressure. That was not enough for a real economic recovery. Because: Historically high round timber costs meet falling sawn timber prices. This development is forcing sawmills to make painful production cuts.
