For 2025, companies reported a cumulative cutting volume of 14.3 million m³ of log wood (figures including Holzkurier estimate). Thus, cutting exceeded the 2024 level (13.96 million m³). In 2023, Holzkurier recorded a cutting volume of just over 14 million m³, and of almost 14.7 million m³ in 2022. Including the companies that did not report any figures for 2025 and previous years, log cutting totaled approximately 15.6 million m³ in 2025.
The ten largest individual production sites accounted for a total cutting volume of 8.24 million m³ of log wood in 2025. This means that these sawmills cut around 53% of the total volume recorded by the Holzkurier (including estimates). In 2025, three sawmill sites reported exceeding the 1-million-m³-mark: Binderholz in Fügen, Mayr-Melnhof Holz in Leoben, and Holzindustrie Maresch in Retz.
Companies are skeptical about the new year. Whether the target figures can be achieved will depend on the supply of log wood, which became a major issue in 2025. Added to this is the high raw material price, something that is not (yet) reflected in sales figures. Nevertheless, many companies have reported 2026 target figures that are stable at the 2025 level or even plan to cut more than in 2025. As a result, this year’s cumulative cutting volume could reach 16 million m³ (reported figures plus estimates).
