From January to March, German exports of softwood lumber and planed timber totaled 2 million m³. According to Destatis, this corresponds to a decrease of 15% or 343,000 m³ compared to the first quarter of 2024. As you can see in the Datacube, the current foreign trade volume is nearly exactly the same as in the first quarter of 2018 (1.99 million m³). The peak was reached in 2022 at 2.77 million m³. In March 2025 alone, 645,000 m³ of softwood lumber were exported, compared to 766,000 m³ in the same month of last year. Thus, foreign trade was down by 121,000 m³ or 16%.

The US remained the most important foreign market with a constant trade volume of just under 551,000 m³. Exports to the Netherlands also remained mostly stable (177,000 m³; -1%). Meanwhile, marked decreases were recorded in deliveries to Austria (174,000 m³, -21%), France (173,000 m³; -11%) or Italy (134,000 m³; -12%).

Germany was only able to increase its trade with Canada: 67,000 m³ correspond to a year-on-year increase of 76%, according to Destatis.
