Pollmeier Massivholz remains by far the largest hardwood processing company in Germany with 840,000 m³ a year. With its three production sites Aschaffenburg, Creuzburg and Malchow, the company accounts for more than half of the total German cutting volume.
The second biggest manufacturer of hardwood lumber in Germany is Holzwerk Obermeier in Schwindegg, with an annual cutting volume of 100,000 m³. In Germany, there are 16 sawmills whose cutting volume exceeds 20,000 m³ a year.
In 2023, the German hardwood sawmills plan to cut 1.61 million m³ of log wood, which corresponds to a decrease in production of around 30,000 m³ or 2% compared to last year.
According to figures from the Holzkurier survey, 283,000 m³ of hardwood logs were cut in Austria last year. After a record production output of 296,000 m³ was achieved in 2021, cutting decreased by 4% last year.
The biggest Austrian manufacturer is Abalon Hardwood in Heiligenkreuz with a cutting volume of 55,000 m³ a year. After the company had cut a total of 70,000 m³ in 2021, production was curtailed to 55,000 m³ last year. EHP of Frauental is in second place with an annual cutting volume of 40,000 m³. Master Laubholz of Riegersburg and Wibeba Holz of Wieselburg both came in third with 20,000 m³ a year. These four companies account for 135,000 m³ and thus almost half of the total Austrian cutting volume.
In 2023, the Austrian hardwood sawmills project a total cutting volume of 274,000 m³. Similar to Germany, production is expected to decrease by 3%.
