In 2020, the Binder Beteiligungsverwaltung GmbH passed the €1 billion mark for the first time with sales totaling €1,044 million. This corresponds to a year-on-year increase of 10%.

From €1 billion to €2.6 billion in three years

2020 was also the year before the company’s massive expansion, i. e. before the closing of the takeover of the two Klausner sawmills and the acquisition of BSW Timber’s eight sites. As a result, CEO Reinhard Binder expects sales to reach around € 2.6 billion in 2022. If this target is reached, it would result in a sevenfold increase in sales in the ten-year period from 2013 to 2022 – from €370 million to €2,600 million.

In the end, earnings are more important than sales, and at Binderholz, they are growing at an even faster rate than sales. The holding has seen its revenue from ordinary activities grow massively since the takeover of Klenk Holz. From 2017 to 2018, an increase of over 173% to €128 million was recorded.

Revenue from ordinary activities up 70% in 2020

Revenue from ordinary activities remained at this level in 2019, before it rose sharply again in 2020: by 70% to €214 million. In relation to sales, thus, revenue from ordinary activities reached 20.5%, which is the highest percentage of all the balance sheets of Austrian timber companies which have been available to date. In the two years before, it had always been at around 13%.

Tenfold increase in net profit since 2015

In 2020, net profit amounted to €153 million which is a further increase of 46% compared to the good year of 2019. Since 2015, Binderholz’s net profit has seen a tenfold increase from €15 million.

The financial year 2020 was characterized by the uncertainties brought about by the first year of the coronavirus pandemic. Lumber and glued timber prices only started rising once global DIY activity and the new construction and renovation sectors began driving demand for lumber beyond previous expectations. This development was reflected in the 10% growth in Binderholz’s sales.

Cost of materials below 40%

At the same time, 2020 was the year in which the log price had reached a historic low in the summer months and when glue and energy prices as well as the cost of logistics remained at normal levels. This led to a further 10% decrease of the cost of materials to only 36%. Ten years earlier, the cost of material had been at 60%.
