US lumber imports from Europe at 10%

When it comes to lumber imports, the US keeps approaching a new record level in the past five-year period (as you can see in our Datacube). Europe in particular saw its shipments to the US increase. Imports from South America, on the other hand, stagnated.

Main supplier Canada saw a further increase of 13% year on year, bringing the overall volume to just under 22 million m³. More than 85% of the imported softwood lumber comes from Canada.

As data published by the FAS show, European countries were also successful in shipping their lumber overseas. With Germany in the lead (1.3 million m³; +38%), the other supplying countries, such as Romania (325,000 m³; +164%), Austria (298,000 m³; +52%), Finland (86,000 m³; +55%) and Russia (76,000 m³; +55%), also saw their export volumes grow strongly compared to the first eight months of 2020. Only US imports from Sweden remained more or less unchanged (476,000 m³; +1%).

As a result of this positive trend, European lumber suppliers already account for around 10% of overall US softwood lumber imports.

For the South American supplying countries Brazil (389,000 m³; +3%) and Chile (164,000 m³; +0%), on the other hand, developments were less positive in the first eight months.
