From January to July, the US imported 22 million m³ of softwood lumber, i.e. around 18% more than last year. Import volumes vary greatly this year. With over 3 million m³, the biggest volume was recorded in May. July, on the other hand, was a weak month compared to previous years, as a look in the Datacube shows.
Overall, the US is a lucrative market for EU lumber exporters. In the course of the past five years, Europe accounted for an increasing share in imports which have risen from 3% (650,000 m³) in the first half year of 2017 to currently 11% (2 million m³).
Canada exported 19.5 million m³ of softwood lumber to the US in the first seven months, which is a year-on-year increase of 2.757 million m³ or 17%. This brings imports closer to the level recorded in 2017 (19.6 million m³).
In the US import ranking, Germany is in second place with more than 1 million m³ (+30%). The US has been Germany’s most important export market since 2019. Austrian softwood lumber exports rose by 46% to around 250,000 m³. The biggest relative increase was recorded in US imports from Romania (300,000 m³). The majority of Romanian lumber is exported to the US by HS Timber.
