The US buy less, Europeans with remarkable increases

In the first five months, US softwood sawn timber imports fell by 7% to 13.5 million m³. In April and May in particular, there were sharp decreases due to COVID-19. Despite this development, Europeans saw double-digit increases.

While regular supplier Canada exported 11.7 million m³ to the US and thus lost 10% in export volume, Germany saw its shipments rise by nearly 40% to more than 600,000 m³. Swedish exporters have seen an even more remarkable trend with exports increasing by 86% to 320,000 m³. Austria managed to sell 110,000 m³ in the first five months, i.e. 30% more than last year. Romania (mainly HS Timber) recorded a 34% increase bringing the total to around 75,000 m³.
