Article by Martina Nöstler (translated by Eva Guzely) | 09.07.2020 - 09:14

With a total of 1.86 million m³, Austria saw its exports fall by 9% compared to the same period of 2019. In the first two months of 2020, exports were still slightly above last year’s level. In March (482,000 m³; -8%) and April (386,000 m³; -27%), however, they saw a marked decrease due to COVID-19.

According to preliminary data published by Statistik Austria, a particularly sharp decline was recorded in exports to Austria’s main foreign market, i.e. Italy, which bought only 728,000 m³ (-18%). Shipments to Germany (324,000 m³; -5%), Slovenia (211,000 m³; -6%) and Japan (89,000 m³; -19%) also decreased.

Austria saw an increase in softwood sawn timber exports to only three countries. With 72,000 m³, the US received 16% more. 46,000 m³ (+6%) were sold to the Czech Republic and exports to China rose by 74% to 37,000 m³.
