Japan changes its softwood sawn timber suppliers

In the first six months, Japan imported 2.6 million m³ of softwood sawn timber and thus considerably less than last year. Apart from Canada, Finland, Austria and Romania were particularly affected by this negative trend. Russia and Sweden, on the other hand, exported more so far.

Main supplier Canada exported 630,000 m³ (-9%) to Japan in the first half year. The increase in Russian shipments is surprising, since they are on the decrease on many markets due to harvesting difficulties in Russia.

Sweden recorded a 16% increase on the Japanese market (440,000 m³).

Imports from Finland (400,000 m³; -11%), Austria (120,000 m³; -26%), Chile (116,000 m³; -36%) and Romania (83,000 m³; -18%) saw double-digit decreases.
