Schneider to build a sawmill and CLT production

Article by Gerd Ebner (translated by Eva Guzely) | 29.01.2020 - 16:41

The company is going to invest a total of 80 million € and is going to build a sawmill with an annual production capacity of 200,000 m³ of sawn timber. At the production site, large-diameter as well as small-diameter logs from forest properties are to be processed.

The sawmill is a special sawmill for Schneider’s own CLT production which is also going to be built in Meßkirch. The company plans to produce 100,000 m³/year there. “The further processing of sawn timber is going to focus on specially developed products for claddings for multi-story timber buildings”, confirms owner and managing director Ferdinand Schneider in a press release.

Last year, the company produced already 20,000 m³ of CLT at its headquarters. This brings overall production to at least 120,000 m³.

Bestwood Schneider is known for a closed raw material cycle, which is why on-site heat supply is also part of the project. For this purpose, a combined heat and power generation unit, which uses biomass for generating 12 MW of thermal output, is going to be built. A pellet production is planned for wood waste.

The machine suppliers have not yet been chosen. Holzwerke Schneider are still in the planning phase and are about to place definite orders. The start-up of the site is planned at the end of 2021.

Schneider’s new construction project is only one on a long list of other new constructions and changes to existing sites in Southern Germany and Austria (see article “New construction revival”). Recently, Herbert Handlos GmbH made their plans more concrete. The company also wants to produce exclusively for its own further processing (see article “Special sawmill”).
