Canadian softwood lumber production declined 18.4% in December to a total of 4.3 million m³. This is 11% less than in the previous year.

In terms of sales, sawmills also yielded a total of 4.3 million m³ which is 18% less than in November. Compared to the previous year, the decrease amounted to 10% according to Statistics Canada.

The extent of this decline's impact in the 4Q on Canadian sawmills also becomes apparent in the most recently published balances of West Fraser and Canfor: Both enterprises posted losses in the closing quarter.
