Market-related shutdown of Metsä pulp mill

On March 31, Metsä Fibre will again shut down its Joutseno pulp mill in Finland. The company cites the current uncertain demand situation in the Asian markets as reason for this step.

Metsä Fibre has not provided any specific information regarding the duration of this latest shutdown. In a press release, the company merely states that the situation is being monitored.

The pulp mill in Joutseno/FI was already shut down between June and December 8, 2025 due to the persistently challenging situation in sales markets for long-fiber softwood pulp. At the time, Metsä Fibre had announced the possibility of further production curtailments in 2026. 

The Joutseno pulp mill has an annual production capacity of 690,000 t of NBSK pulp and uses industrial spruce and pine logs as well as wood chips as raw materials.
