UPM to close newsprint mill and paper production line

In May, Finnish company UPM of Helsinki announced its plans to permanently close the newsprint mill in Hürth/DE and to shut down one fine paper machine at Nordland Papier in Dörpen/DE. These plans are now being implemented.

Graphic paper production in Hürth is expected to end on August 31, 2024, while the paper machine 3 at Nordland Papier will be shut down by the end of 2024 at the latest. As a result, the annual production capacity of newsprint will decrease by 330,000 tonnes. When it comes to uncoated fine paper, capacity will be reduced by 280,000 tonnes. These steps will save UPM €45 million in annual costs. 338 jobs are affected.
