Swedish timber company Södra, Växjö, has announced it will significantly expand the capacity of its sawmill in Mönsterås/SE. According to a press release, lumber production there will almost double from 450,000 to 800,000 m³/yr. Currently the project is in the approval phase. Negotiations with local residents are scheduled to start in May. The mill can gradually be scaled up to an output of 550,000 m³/yr. To achieve higher output levels, it takes investment in new machinery. Sawmill by-products will be processed in the neighbouring pulp mill.

The additional output will primarily be destined for the markets in the UK and the US. With its own harbor in Mönsterås the site is ideal for export production. Södra Timber's CEO Håkan Svensson also sees potential in China. The delivery volume there has doubled in 2014, with the outlook being positive for the year running.
