Thus, the estimate does not confirm reports of much bigger volumes of damaged wood. In the weeks following the storm, there were concerns that as many as 20 million m³, i.e. double the initial estimate by Skogsstyrelsen, might have been damaged. In early January, 10 million m³ was a figure reported by the Swedish Forest Agency.
Based on data provided by 50 of the 77 surveyed forest owners, Skogsstyrelsen calculated an area-weighted share of storm damage per administrative district. For this estimate, the Swedish Forest Agency used the known timber volumes for thinning stands and stands that have reached the long-term planned harvest age in each administrative district.
The storm primarily affected the districts of Dalarna, Gävleborg and Västernorrland. 90% of the damaged wood accumulated in Dalarna and Gävleborg (see map).
