In the first eleven months, China imported 22.1 million m³ of softwood logs, i.e. 7% less than in the same period last year.
16.7 million m³ were imported from New Zealand, China’s number one supplier. This corresponds to a 3% increase compared to 2024. New Zealand thus accounts for 76% of total Chinese softwood log imports, as figures published by China Customs Statistics show. Compared to the first eleven months of 2024, New Zealand saw its share increase by eight percentage points.
China also purchased more softwood logs from Japan (+13% to 1.6 million m³), Canada (+7% to 1.1 million m³) and Latvia (+71% to 494,000 m³).
Meanwhile, double-digit decreases were recorded in imports from Australia (-11% to 430,000 m³), Germany (-61% to 369,000 m³) and Poland (-63% to 336,000 m³). China also reduced its purchases from South Africa by about one third (218,000 m³) compared to last year. at 161,000 m³ (-7%), shipments from Denmark also remained below last year’s level.
Imports from Bosnia and Herzegovina, however, nearly doubled, reaching a total of 137,000 m³.
