Marked decrease in softwood log imports

Article by Martina Nöstler (translated by Eva Guzely) | 10.07.2025 - 11:17

From January to April, Austria imported nearly 1.9 million m³ of softwood sawlogs, as Statistik Austria reports. Year on year, this corresponds to a 16% decrease. A look in the Datacube shows that it was also the smallest volume in the first four months since 2017. At the time, imports totaled 1.7 million m³. Since then, imports peaked at 2.8 million m³ in the first four months of 2021.

A downward trend can be observed in softwood sawlog imports from nearly all main supplying countries, most of all Germany (939,000 m³; -7%). Decreases were also recorded in purchases from the Czech Republic (639,000 m³; -20%), Slovenia (141,000 m³; -21%) or Italy (124,000 m³; -35%). Only two of the Top 10 suppliers showed marked relative increases, i.e. Slovakia (20,000 m³; +27%) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (1,200 m³; +88%).
