In January and February, German beech log exports grew by 30% year on year. As figures published by Destatis show, the last time a similar export volume was recorded was in 2019. Massive increases in sales to Denmark (15,300 m³; +251%) and India (4,400 m³; +274%) were among the drivers of this positive development.
Two countries stand out in particular: Sweden made it to fourth place of the most important buyers of German beech logs with a volume of 11,100 m³. Belgium follows closely behind with 10,900 m³. The corresponding Datacube timeline shows that volumes were much smaller in previous years. The second-best start of the year, with 7,100 m³ exported in the first two months, was recorded in 2008, i.e. more than 15 years ago.
As number two foreign market, Austria increased its purchases by 14% year on year, passing the 40,000-m³-mark for the first time since 2019.
Meanwhile, a year-on-year decrease of 7% was recorded in shipments to main buyer China, which brings the trade volume down to 65,400 m³.
