Article by Philipp Matzku (translated by Eva Guzely) | 10.03.2025 - 09:22

Germany and the Czech Republic are the main supplying countries. Together, they account for around 80% of the total import volume. Austrian softwood log imports from Germany fell by 2%, from 2.7 million m³ in 2023 to 2.6 million m³ last year. Purchases from the Czech Republic were down by 15% and amounted to only 2 million m³. According to Statistik Austria, another 973,000 m³ were imported from Italy (515,000 m³; -28%) and Slovenia (458,000 m³; +34%). Imports from Poland decreased by 38% to 51,800 m³, while those from Slovakia halved to only 50,000 m³.

In 2023, Austrian softwood log imports totaled 6.4 million m³, which corresponds to a year-on-year decrease of 10%. The biggest import volume, i.e. 8.7 million m³, was recorded in 2020. The last time imports were lower than in 2024 was in 2015 (5.3 million m³).

Already between the years 2004 (3.8 million m³) and 2007 (3.4 million m³), deliveries from Germany were higher than in 2024, as figures in the Datacube show. The biggest volume of softwood logs imported from Germany so far was recorded in 2020 at 5.1 million m³.
